North Macedonia and Albania with new protocol for joint customs controls

The Customs Directorates of Macedonia and Albania are strengthening their partnership through the establishment of a new Protocol governing customs controls at their common border crossings. According to the Customs Directorate, enhancing border management with Albania via more effective controls and streamlined trade facilitation is anticipated to accelerate the region’s integration processes within the European Union. The central focus of the customs administrations, as reported by the Directorate, will be on optimizing customs procedures.

These improvements will be guided by the terms outlined in the new Protocol, which formalizes the agreement between the two states for managing their shared border crossings. To advance this cooperation, delegations from both national customs directorates convened. These high-level meetings were attended by the respective directors, Boban Nikollovski and Besmir Beja, alongside high representatives from the World Bank (WB).

The discussions centered on operationalizing the new framework. The collaboration aims to ensure that the customs processes are modernized and harmonized, thereby facilitating smoother and more efficient cross-border trade between Macedonia and Albania. This commitment underscores a shared dedication to improving regional economic connectivity and aligning customs practices with broader EU standards.
