The Ministry of Environment organized a debate on the new environmental permit for the USJE cement factory

The Ministry of Environment recently hosted a public debate concerning the process for issuing a new integrated Category A environmental permit to USJE Cement Plant. This permit is scheduled to define the operational conditions for the company over the next seven years. While the Ministry asserted that the proposed new operating criteria meet European directives, the assurance did not satisfy the civil initiative group, “Stop Usje.”

The advocacy group “Stop Usje” publicly opposed the issuance of the Category A environmental permit, specifically challenging the authorization for the plant’s operations between 2027 and 2034.

Representatives from the initiative expressed deep skepticism regarding the regulatory process. They noted that, to date, none of the proposals and observations previously submitted to the Ministry of Environment had been incorporated into the plans. Despite repeated assurances that the standards would align with European benchmarks, the civil group maintained that these statements were insufficient.

Their concerns center on the perceived lack of implementation of community input within the environmental review process. The debate highlighted a significant divergence between the regulatory body’s confirmation of compliance and the public’s demand for tangible guarantees regarding environmental protection under the new permit structure. The proceedings underscore ongoing tension between industrial operations and environmental oversight within the region.
