Severe heatwave in the US – some states cancel Independence Day celebrations

An extreme heat wave significantly disrupted July 4th Independence Day celebrations across various regions of the United States. Due to the intense heat, several public events and parades, including those in Washington, D.C., were canceled or temporarily closed. A major fair held in the capital, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States, was forced to pause operations after some participants experienced health issues attributed to high temperatures, requiring medical attention via ambulance.

The U.S. National Weather Service reported that over 165 million people faced record high temperatures across the East Coast and Midwest. In certain areas, temperatures reached levels approaching historic records, posing risks for outdoor activities.

These extreme conditions prompted local authorities in multiple states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Colorado, to issue high-risk heat warnings, advising citizens to limit prolonged sun exposure. Consequently, several holiday events were altered, and some official ceremonies were postponed or rescheduled for safety. Meteorologists anticipate that the heat wave may persist in the coming days, while some regions are also expected to see strong storms.

Experts monitoring the weather patterns have noted that the increasing frequency and intensity of such heat waves are linked to global climate change. The disruption underscores the immediate public health challenges posed by severe weather events during major national observances.
