The Swedish defense company Saab has secured a contract with the Swedish State Agency for Defense Procurement (FMV) to supply 16 JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets intended for Ukraine. The agreement, valued at approximately 2.7 billion euros, encompasses the aircraft, along with necessary spare parts, software, logistical support, and armament. While Saab received the order from the Swedish state, confirmation regarding a separate acquisition contract between Ukraine and FMV has not been provided.
Based on the current agreements, Ukraine is anticipated to receive one used Gripen C/D aircraft for every new Gripen E unit. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonsson stated that Ukraine’s long-term objective is to establish an air force centered on Gripen aircraft, with potential acquisition numbers reaching up to 150 units. He also noted that the United Kingdom is contributing partial financing to the project.
Minister Jonsson highlighted several operational advantages of the Gripen, including lower maintenance costs compared to the F-16, the ability to operate from standard runways, and reduced logistical requirements, allowing for refueling and resupply in about 15 minutes. The Gripen E variant is specifically designed to counter modern Russian air defense systems and Sukhoi family jets. However, Saab indicated that deliveries of the new Gripen E aircraft are scheduled to commence in 2029 and conclude in 2030.
Conversely, the older Gripen C/D aircraft could be delivered to Ukraine as early as the first half of 2027. Swedish analysts suggest the deal carries significant political weight, signaling sustained long-term Western support for Ukraine.
