NATO concludes summit in Ankara, adopts six-point declaration

The NATO summit concluded in Ankara following two days of meetings, resulting in the adoption of a joint declaration outlining six key points. The declaration began by reaffirming member nations’ commitment to collective defense, stressing that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. The statement emphasized that unity and solidarity remain foundational to the alliance’s security and prosperity.

A significant portion of the declaration addressed Russia, identified as the primary long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic stability. To counter this threat, allies announced increased defense spending, with European Allies and Canada committing over $139 billion in investments through 2025. Furthermore, the summit revealed that over $50 billion in new military purchases were declared in Ankara, alongside plans to expand joint production and industry cooperation.

The agreement highlighted that European countries and Canada will assume greater defense responsibilities, building deterrence through a combination of nuclear, conventional, and counter-missile capabilities, supplemented by space and cyber defenses. The allies committed to investing in advanced military systems, including AI and long-range precision strikes. The declaration also addressed support for Ukraine, affirming the allies’ unwavering backing for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Members pledged 70 billion euros in military equipment, assistance, and training for Ukraine in 2026, with continued support expected in 2027. Regarding regional stability, the NATO statement reiterated that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons and called for respect for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The summit concluded with thanks to Turkey for hosting the proceedings.
