The Bar Association of Kosovo (OAK) has confirmed the initiation of the closure procedures for the Paraburgim Center, located in Gjilan. This development follows an official notification received from the Kosovo Correctional Service. According to the OAK, the closure process is directly connected to the operationalization of the Treaty established between the Republic of Kosovo and the Kingdom of Denmark.
Specifically, the treaty governs the utilization of the Paraburgim facility for the serving of sentences handed down by Danish authorities within Kosovo. The OAK released a statement confirming that the necessary administrative steps have been taken, noting, “We have been officially notified by the Kosovo Correctional Service that the closure process of the Paraburgim Center in Gjilan has begun.” Furthermore, the announcement detailed that the orderly transfer of detainees residing at the center to alternative correctional institutions has commenced. These transfers will not occur all at once, but rather will be executed incrementally.
The process, the OAK stated, “will develop in phases, in accordance with the assessments” conducted by relevant authorities. This phased approach is designed to ensure continuity of care and proper management of the inmates during the transition period. The measures underscore the administrative coordination between judicial bodies within Kosovo and international agreements concerning penal cooperation with Denmark.
