Andonovski: It is important that the diaspora be allowed to vote electronically

Minister of Digital Transformation, Stefan Andonovski, emphasized the significance of enabling the Macedonian diaspora to vote, noting that these citizens contribute over one billion in annual remittances to the country. Andonovski stated that the necessary infrastructure can be developed within the next three years through advancements in digitalization. He explained that the proposal involves amendments to the Electoral Code designed to establish a functional online voting system by 2029.

According to Andonovski, this system would restrict online voting rights exclusively to registered Macedonian passport holders residing abroad. To support this initiative, the government has already established a digital identity system accessible through the ‘Uslugi.gov.mk’ portal, where all citizens are required to register. During the announcement, Andonovski stressed that facilitating this right for the diaspora is an important matter for the nation’s governance and connection with its citizens abroad.

The integration of digital technology is viewed as the key to making online voting a viable reality within the projected three-year timeframe. The proposed changes aim to modernize electoral procedures while ensuring that only verified, registered expatriates can participate in voting processes remotely.
