Negotiations are reportedly progressing between Turkey and the United States concerning the sale of the Russian S-400 air defense system to a Gulf state. This potential agreement is viewed as a critical step that could pave the way for Ankara’s reinstatement into the American F-35 fighter jet program. Reports indicate that Turkey might announce a decision on this matter shortly.
The proposed move is part of broader diplomatic efforts by Turkey to secure the lifting of U.S. sanctions, which were initially imposed following Turkey’s acquisition of the S-400 system in 2019. The purchase led to Turkey’s exclusion from the F-35 program and the imposition of sanctions in 2020, after Washington assessed that the Russian technology posed potential safety risks to the F-35 aircraft.
Sources suggest that while U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to reconsider sanctions and Turkey’s participation in the F-35 program after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, current U.S. law prohibits the sale of the aircraft as long as Turkey retains the S-400.
Consequently, transferring the system to a third-party nation is considered the most viable resolution pathway. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has confirmed that discussions regarding the S-400 remain active between Russian officials and Turkish authorities. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized the issue as “extremely sensitive,” emphasizing that dialogue between Moscow and Ankara will continue.
