During May and June, border crossings in the Kukës district experienced record levels of traffic as numerous citizens traveled between Albania and Kosovo. The surge in movement was primarily attributed to domestic tourism, with thousands of individuals utilizing the crossings to reach popular destinations such as the Albanian coast and Valbona National Park for weekend getaways and summer holidays. According to Arben Alika, the director of the Local Directorate for Border and Migration in Kukës, the volume of movement was substantial.
He reported that over two million entries and exits were processed throughout May and June. This translates to an average daily processing rate that exceeded 42,000 people. The majority of the individuals passing through these checkpoints were identified as citizens of Kosovo.
To effectively manage this significant and sustained increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the Border Police implemented enhanced operational measures across all border crossing points within the district. These adjustments included increasing the number of operational lanes and augmenting the personnel stationed at the checkpoints. These measures were put in place to maintain security and efficiency while accommodating the high volume of people traveling to and from the region during the peak tourist season.
