Enrollment data from the University of Pristina indicates a noticeable trend of decreased student interest in certain humanities programs, specifically those focused on the native culture. As of April 6, registration figures highlighted low applicant numbers for key disciplines within the Faculty of Philology. Specifically, the Albanian Literature program recorded 18 applicants, while the Albanian Language program registered 22 students.
This low participation rate in the core Albanian language and literature fields contrasts sharply with the sustained high demand for medical studies, with the Faculty of Medicine remaining one of the most highly sought-after academic departments. Given these enrollment patterns, both the University of Pristina and the Ministry of Education are reportedly considering implementing new measures designed to stimulate student registration across academic areas experiencing reduced interest. While the Faculty of Philology maintains nine active programs, the two majors centered on the native tongue are showing particularly subdued activity.
According to Abdulla Rexhepi, the Dean of Philology, these figures underscore a trend requiring institutional attention. The data suggests that while the foundational study of the Albanian language and its literature remains vital, attracting sufficient numbers of students to these specific programs presents a current challenge for higher education planning in the region.
