Server: The US must support Serbia to unblock Kosovo

The dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia has reached a significant impasse, according to assessments following the last trilateral meeting in January. Despite Pristina asserting its readiness to implement agreed-upon frameworks, progress on normalizing relations remains stalled. Former diplomat Daniel Serwer has attributed the current stagnation primarily to a perceived lack of political will emanating from Belgrade.

Serwer has publicly urged international bodies, specifically the European Union and the United States, to increase diplomatic pressure on Serbia to facilitate a breakthrough and help unblock Kosovo’s path toward integration. The core discussions regarding normalization between Kosovo and Serbia remain suspended, and crucial agreements reached in previous forums, such as Brussels and Ohr, have yet to be fully operationalized. Although international mediators have signaled intentions to revitalize the dialogue this year, concrete developments have been notably absent to date.

Serwer highlighted that this period of inactivity marks a significant duration without concerted effort. The international community’s efforts to move the bilateral relationship forward have encountered substantial hurdles, suggesting that sustained external mediation and commitment from all parties are necessary to overcome the deadlock. The focus remains on translating past diplomatic agreements into tangible, on-the-ground implementation to advance regional stability.
