Serbian Minister Snezhana Paunović recently addressed calls for her resignation following allegations concerning her past statements regarding Albanians from Kosovo. After facing demands from segments of the opposition and non-governmental organizations in Serbia regarding hate speech directed at the Albanian community in Kosovo, Paunović issued a written statement on Tuesday. In the statement, Paunović, who was born in Peja in 1975, did not reiterate the specific claims of desiring ethnic cleansing.
Instead, she addressed her political allegiance, asserting that she is not abandoning herself or the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS). She drew a parallel to the SPS’s historical role, particularly during the 1990s when the party was headed by Slobodan Milošević. Paunović stated, “The public has the right to know that…” The controversy stems from remarks she made concerning the situation in Kosovo in 1998.
Her defense suggests that her current political stance remains firmly connected to the party’s structure, despite the accusations regarding her past rhetoric concerning the ethnic composition of the region. The incident has reignited political debate over historical statements made by high-ranking officials concerning the ethnic makeup and stability of Kosovo.
