LSDM: The election code is not a prerequisite for EU membership, but the elections are fair and democratic

The Democratic League of Masonry (LSDM) has publicly stated that the assertion linking the obstruction of the country’s Electoral Code to Macedonia’s inability to advance within the European Union is a calculated manipulation. According to the LSDM, the European Union’s requirements for accession are not aimed at enforcing specific amendments to the electoral code tailored to the needs of any single political faction. Instead, the Union maintains demands for foundational institutional improvements, including the establishment of credible, transparent elections, an independent judiciary, and robust measures against corruption.

The LSDM leadership challenged the narrative suggesting that legislative reforms are the primary sticking point. They argued that the current government’s proposed solutions regarding the electoral framework are not mandated by Brussels. “OBRM-PDUKM has blocked exactly this for years,” the league stated.

Furthermore, the LSDM clarified that while improving electoral legislation is part of a necessary broader reform agenda, the specific measures being advanced by the government do not constitute explicit conditions for progress in the EU negotiation process. The organization emphasized that these proposed legislative changes represent domestic political initiatives rather than external requirements set by the European Union. The LSDM warned that adopting the current proposals risks implementing solutions that could potentially open the door to manipulation, rather than guaranteeing the systemic reforms necessary for full EU integration.

This statement underscores a divergence between the political actors pushing specific legislative changes and the established criteria outlined by the European Union for membership advancement.
