Billionaire Warren Buffett halts donations to Bill Gates’ philanthropic foundation

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has modified his long-standing pledge of charitable donations following revelations concerning the Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates. Previously, Buffett had committed to an “irrevocable” annual donation of shares in Berkshire Hathaway to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the remainder of his life. However, the planned contributions to the Gates Foundation have been suspended.

The shift in plans comes after the surfacing of details regarding Mr. Gates’s associations with former sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Consequently, the shares, valued in the billions of dollars, will no longer be directed solely to the Gates Foundation.

Instead, the assets will be distributed among four distinct foundations, which include institutions associated with members of the Buffett family. In a statement, Buffett, 95, confirmed that he intends to gradually donate his remaining shares over the course of the next eight years. He noted that the timing of these transfers is subject to unforeseen circumstances, stating, “Of course, mortality is unpredictable.”

The adjustment signals a significant pivot from the initial commitment to the large philanthropic organization.

While the commitment to giving remains, the structure and primary recipient of the wealth have been redirected. This change modifies the scope of the financial support previously earmarked for the Gates Foundation, establishing a new distribution framework for his vast holdings.
