Canada is burning, the sky in Toronto has turned yellow

Smoke from recent wildfires in Canada and other regions is causing hazy skies and severely degraded air quality for millions of people as the smoke drifts into the United States. An outbreak of wildfires across Western Ontario, Canada, and Minnesota is directing dense smoke toward the Great Lakes and the Northeast through Friday. This influx is creating extremely hazardous air quality conditions and may result in visible atmospheric discoloration, similar to conditions observed in New York in 2023.

Initially, the smoke plumes were localized north of the Great Lakes. However, a shift in wind patterns has allowed the smoke to move into the Lower 48 states. By Wednesday evening, reports indicated that the smoke had reached the Interstate 95 corridor.

The combination of smoke from multiple sources is presenting significant air quality challenges across the region. Health advisories are in effect due to the elevated levels of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Residents are advised to monitor local air quality reports and take necessary precautions to minimize exposure to the smoke.

The persistence of these smoke plumes is expected to affect travel and outdoor activities across the affected areas.
