A new study conducted by Deloitte and Google forecasts continued expansion in global tourism, projecting that international tourist trips worldwide will reach 2.4 billion by 2040. The analysis predicts a significant shift in the ranking of the world’s most visited destinations, suggesting that Spain is set to surpass France in popularity. In 2025, the data indicated that France was expected to lead the market with approximately 102 million international visitors.
Spain was closely trailing, projected to receive 96.8 million tourists. However, the long-term projections suggest a reversal of this trend. By 2040, Spain is forecast to attract an estimated 110 million annual tourists, while France is anticipated to host around 105 million visitors.
The United States and China are expected to maintain their positions within the top five global destinations. Meanwhile, Italy’s ranking may decline, potentially falling to sixth place. Mexico is forecast to improve its standing, rising to the fifth position.
Furthermore, the report suggests that several emerging economies, including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates, are poised to enter the top tier of global tourist destinations. These projections outline a dynamic evolution of the international travel landscape over the next two decades.
