Massive fires in Serbia, EU sends helicopters and firefighters

The European Union Civil Protection Mechanism has deployed resources, including helicopters and firefighters, to aid Serbia in managing a massive fire affecting a nature reserve in the northern part of the nation. According to the head of the EU mission in Belgrade, these deployments began on Saturday. Serbia activated the EU mechanism on Friday after battling prolonged fire incidents.

The primary focus of the emergency response has been a fire at Deliblatska Pescara, a region notable for its unique salt marshes and forests, situated approximately 80 kilometers from the capital, Belgrade. Reports also indicate that other fires were active in the southwest region of the country. Andreas Beckerath, head of the EU mission, issued a statement emphasizing support for the nation, stating, “We stand with Serbia in the protection of lives, means of subsistence, and the unique natural heritage of Deliblatska Pescara.”

The deployment of helicopters and specialized firefighting teams underscores the scale of the emergency response.

The international assistance aims to bolster local efforts to control the blaze, which threatens the sensitive ecological balance of the reserve. The coordinated effort involves multiple agencies working to contain the massive conflagration while addressing multiple fire outbreaks across different parts of Serbia.
