Fires spread across Serbia, Belgrade requests aid from the EU

The European Union Civil Protection Mechanism has deployed resources, including helicopters and firefighters, to assist Serbia in managing large-scale fires within a nature reserve in the northern part of the country. Serbia activated the mechanism on Friday following weeks of battling blazes in the Deliblatska Pescara area, a distinctive ecological zone comprising riverbeds and forests situated approximately 80 kilometers from Belgrade. The assistance is also addressing other active fires located in the southwest region of Serbia.

Andreas Beckerath, head of the EU mission in Belgrade, stated, “We stand with Serbia in protecting lives, means of livelihood, and the unique natural heritage of the Deliblatska Sands.”

Luka Čaušić, who heads the Serbian Department for Emergencies, detailed the scope of the European aid. This support package includes four Black Hawk firefighting helicopters originating from Romania, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, alongside 55 additional firefighters. The coordinated effort represents a significant international response to the ongoing environmental crisis caused by the persistent fires.

The deployment underscores the international commitment to supporting Serbia in mitigating the impact of the extensive blazes across its natural reserves.
