Trump says Canada wants ‘benefits’ from being a US state after trade talks fail

Following the suspension of trade negotiations between the United States and Canada late Friday, tensions escalated into a trade dispute. Former President Donald Trump commented that Canada appears to desire “the benefits of being a state, without being one.” In his initial remarks after the talks stalled, Trump also criticized the financial impact on American agriculture, stating that U.S. farmers have endured “large amounts of tariffs” over several years.

The breakdown of negotiations led to the United States imposing new 50% tariffs across various categories of Canadian goods. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the new tariffs as a “miscalculation,” suggesting the measures were intended to “hurt and divide.”

Carney confirmed that Canada plans to retaliate against the tariffs imposed by Trump. Specifically, Canada announced it would counter the measures “dollar for dollar” starting on September 8.

The planned countermeasures will include taxes targeting steel, dairy products, equipment, and electronics. The escalating trade actions have officially placed the US and Canada into a state of commercial conflict. The imposition of these reciprocal tariffs marks a significant deterioration in bilateral trade relations, shifting the focus from negotiation to punitive measures.
