Child Hospitalized in Intensive Care Following Refusal to Vaccinate Against Measles
Tirana – A seven-year-old child is currently receiving treatment in Intensive Care at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Tirana, following a severe case of measles. Director Vera Berisha-Ndrejaj has expressed concern over the situation, attributing it to parental decisions not to vaccinate the child due to misinformation. The child’s parents, along with the parents of seven other individuals hospitalized with milder symptoms of measles, cited fears regarding potential adverse effects of the vaccine as their justification for refusal.
These concerns stemmed from circulating misinformation regarding various disorders. “We are seeing a direct correlation between vaccine hesitancy and the severity of illness,” stated Berisha-Ndrejaj. “The child requiring intensive care demonstrates the potential consequences of disregarding established medical recommendations.”
The clinic reports that one child has been discharged in stable condition following treatment.
Medical staff continue to monitor the remaining hospitalized individuals, all of whom are receiving supportive care.
