Fire Destroys Hundreds of Homes in Malaysian Village

A significant fire has resulted in widespread devastation in Kampung Bahagia, a floating village located in Sandakan, Malaysia. Emergency response teams initiated a rescue operation and provided aid following the blaze that occurred on Sunday. According to reports from Bernama, the state news agency, the fire consumed approximately 9,000 people who are now homeless.

Initial estimates indicate that over 700 of the village’s roughly 1,200 homes were destroyed. The affected area spanned more than four hectares. The fire, which impacted the village, was significantly complicated by dry conditions, limiting the availability of water for firefighting efforts.

Jimmy Lagung, head of the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, stated that securing sufficient water resources presented a major challenge. Authorities are currently focused on providing support to those displaced by the fire and assessing the full extent of the damage. Relief efforts are ongoing, with aid being distributed to the affected residents of the village.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
