Rare Comet to Pass Over New Zealand Skies

A rare celestial event is unfolding as comet C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS approaches New Zealand, offering a limited opportunity for observation before its prolonged absence. The comet, originating from the outer solar system, is currently visible in the southern sky and is expected to remain so for the next two weeks. Astronomers predict the comet will disappear from view for approximately 170,000 years.

Josh Aoraki, an astronomer at Te Whatu Stardome in Auckland, explained that the comet initially traversed the northern hemisphere before “circling the sun.”

While the comet will be visible, optimal viewing conditions are necessary. Aoraki stated that darkness, the use of a telescope, or a camera will be required to fully appreciate its brightness. “It is not a glare,” he emphasized.

This event represents a unique chance for the public to witness a distant cosmic traveler before its extended period of invisibility. The observation window provides a valuable opportunity for stargazers and scientific interest in this particular comet.

  1. “I’m so excited to see this incredible sight – it’s amazing to think about how long it’s been since a comet like this has passed this way!”
