Afrim Gashi, the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, has urged all deputies to adopt a constructive approach and collaborate in passing the Law on the Right and Adequate Representation. Speaking after presenting his report detailing his work over the past two years, Gashi addressed concerns raised by journalists, particularly regarding potential opposition efforts to obstruct the passage of the legislation. Gashi emphasized that robust debate and the submission of proposals are constructive mechanisms necessary for achieving a higher quality legal outcome.
He stated that the parliamentary process allows for multiple avenues of input, including debate, amendments, and the presentation of alternative solutions. “We can debate, submit amendments, propose solutions, and make calls,” Gashi noted. “We have scheduled a public debate where we will hear from experts and lawyers.
Let’s improve the law, not block it, because this is not the proper way.”
The Speaker cautioned against procedural roadblocks, suggesting that such actions are unhelpful to the legislative goal. He added that the body must evolve beyond outdated practices to effectively implement necessary reforms. According to Gashi, the process of updating the existing legal framework will require adequate time and comprehensive input from all stakeholders to ensure the resulting law is robust and reflective of current needs.
His appeal centers on moving forward through consensus rather than confrontation.
