Alarm for the mental health of young people

Rising Concerns Over Young People’s Mental Health in the UK

A new analysis from Zurich Insurance is raising serious concerns about the escalating mental health challenges facing young people in the United Kingdom. The report forecasts that nearly two-thirds – approximately 64% – of adolescents aged 15-19 could be diagnosed with mental or behavioral disorders by 2030. Currently, around 51% of young people within this age group experience mental or behavioral disorders, including conditions such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD.

The study highlights a concerning trend, projecting a significant increase in these diagnoses within the next decade. Mental health is increasingly recognized as the primary driver of long-term inability within the UK, with substantial implications for social welfare programs. Data indicates a strong correlation between mental health challenges and the number of young people not engaged in education, employment, or training – a significant contributor to the “NEET” (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) category.

Researchers emphasize the urgent need for increased investment and targeted support to address this growing crisis and safeguard the well-being of young people’s mental health.
