Alarm in Prizren over unlicensed guides: “Tourism is being damaged, history is being distorted”

The Municipality of Prizren and the Kosovo Tourist Guides Association (GUIDEKS) have issued a joint statement addressing the issue of illegal tour guides within the area. They are calling for strict adherence to established regulations and the immediate cessation of activities conducted by unlicensed guides. In a statement released by the Directorate for Tourism and Economic Development of the Municipality of Prizren, it was highlighted that Prizren holds significant status as a major cultural and historical destination in Kosovo.

The city is noted for welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, serving as a recognized “connecting bridge between cultures, religions, and traditions.”

Despite its popularity, the municipality has observed a concerning increase in the presence and operations of foreign and local guides who lack the required certifications and official authorizations. According to the municipal authorities, the activities of these unlicensed guides not only pose a risk to tourist safety and experience but also undermine fair competition for legitimately certified local guides. The joint appeal emphasizes that all individuals offering guiding services in Prizren must possess the appropriate credentials.

This measure aims to protect the integrity of the local tourism sector, ensure a standardized level of service for all visitors, and uphold the professional standards expected in a key cultural center like Prizren.
