Apple changes the “Hide My Email” function

Apple is preparing a significant update to its “Hide My Email” privacy function, a feature designed to enhance user anonymity when registering for online services. Currently, the service, which is part of the iCloud+ subscription, generates unique, randomized email addresses utilizing the standard @icloud.com domain structure. This similarity to typical Apple user email addresses has created a technical ambiguity, making it challenging for third-party applications and websites to definitively distinguish between a genuine user account and one created through this privacy mechanism.

To address this ambiguity and improve platform integrity, Apple has announced a transition for all addresses generated by both “Hide My Email” and “Sign in with Apple.” Over the coming months, these addresses will migrate to a new, dedicated domain: @private.icloud.com. This structural change is intended to provide clearer demarcation for digital services. By moving the addresses to a specialized domain, Apple aims to enable better identification protocols for developers.

The update will allow external applications and websites to more accurately verify the origin of an incoming email address, thereby strengthening the overall security framework surrounding user privacy. This modification ensures that while the user retains the ability to hide their personal email, the underlying infrastructure supporting the service will be more robust and distinguishable to the platforms utilizing it.
