Australia and Japan Formalize Warship Acquisition Agreement
Melbourne, Australia – Australia and Japan have finalized contracts for three warships within a significant defense agreement, marking a key step in bolstering military cooperation between the two nations. The agreement, valued at approximately €6.5 billion (or $7 billion), will see the delivery of eleven warships to the Australian Navy. The signing ceremony, held in Melbourne on Saturday, was attended by Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japanese Defence Minister Koizumi Shinjiro.
The warships, designated as the Mogami-class frigates, will be constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. This “Mogami Memorandum,” as it’s being referred to, is anticipated to strengthen military ties between Australia and Japan. A core component of the agreement involves “closer industrial cooperation” in defense, according to reports.
The partnership represents a deepening of strategic alignment within the Asia-Pacific region, solidifying the roles of both Australia and Japan as key allies of the United States.
