Austria Expels Three Russian Diplomats Over Espionage Concerns
Vienna, Austria – Austria announced the expulsion of three Russian diplomats on Monday, following investigations into suspected espionage activities. The move, confirmed by Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, stems from concerns related to the installation of antennas on rooftops. Reuters reported that the government’s decision followed intelligence assessments indicating the use of diplomatic immunity for espionage purposes.
Minister Meinl-Reisinger stated, “It is unacceptable for diplomatic immunity to be used for espionage.”
The three expelled Russian diplomats have already departed the country. This action represents the latest development in a series of expulsions initiated by Austria against Russian diplomatic personnel. Since 2020, Austria has previously expelled a total of fourteen Russian diplomats.
The ongoing investigations highlight continued concerns regarding Russian intelligence operations within the country. The Austrian government maintains its commitment to safeguarding national security and upholding international norms. The expulsion of these three diplomats underscores Austria’s stance on protecting its borders and intelligence assets.
