Western Balkan Nations Face Potential Loss of Over 700 Million Euros from EU Growth Plan
The six countries of the Western Balkans risk losing a significant portion of funding from the European Union’s Growth Plan, potentially totaling over 700 million euros by the end of 2024. This warning comes from EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Koss, who cited a failure to implement necessary reforms as the primary cause. According to the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the funding is contingent upon demonstrable progress and is subject to strict deadlines.
The potential loss for North Macedonia alone is estimated at 49.2 million euros. Commissioner Koss stated that a communication was sent last week to regional authorities, urging accelerated reform efforts. The Growth Plan operates on a results-based system with time-limited commitments.
Without completion of key reforms by June or December 2026, the region faces the permanent loss of these allocated million euros. The funds are part of a broader EU initiative designed to support economic development and stability within the Western Balkan nations. Continued delays in implementing reforms could jeopardize the entire program and its associated financial commitments.
