Cryptocurrency threats promise a safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipping Companies Targeted by Cryptocurrency Scam in Strait of Hormuz

A risk management firm, MARISKS, has identified a new scheme involving threatening messages offered to shipping companies seeking a safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The Telegraph reported that the scam involves the promise of transit access in exchange for payments made in cryptocurrency. MARISKS detailed how unknown actors, purportedly representing Iranian authorities, have contacted several shipping companies.

These actors are requesting transit fees paid in cryptocurrency as “permits” for vessels to navigate the strategically vital waterway. The organization has explicitly stated that these communications constitute a fraudulent operation. The Strait of Hormuz has been subject to repeated closures and fee proposals by Iran, raising concerns for international shipping.

This latest development highlights the ongoing tensions in the region. Foreign Minister comments suggest a limited willingness among NATO members to directly engage in conflict with Iran. “The gap between NATO members wishing to join the fight with Iran is ‘very limited,’” the Minister stated.

Shipping companies are being advised to treat these communications with extreme caution and to report any such attempts to relevant authorities.
