Customs Directorate: “Apple” luxury watches seized, replaced with copies, originals end up for sale

Skopje Authorities Uncover Smuggling Scheme Involving High-Value Watches

Skopje, North Macedonia – A sophisticated smuggling operation involving Apple watches was recently uncovered in Skopje following an inspection at Skopje International Airport. The incident, involving a shipment originating from Dubai, highlighted a scheme where a mobile phone store is suspected of facilitating the illicit sale of luxury goods. Customs officials initially discovered 20 smart watches during the inspection of a tablet shipment.

Upon seizure and secure storage, individuals with authorized access to the merchandise replaced the original watches with cheaper imitations while handing over the genuine products to the importer. Following a request from the public prosecutor, a raid was conducted at the mobile phone store. Authorities recovered approximately 570,000 denars’ worth of the original watches.

As a result, six individuals and two legal entities have been arrested. The investigation underscores the ongoing vigilance of customs authorities in preventing the import and sale of undeclared goods. The seized watches are currently being processed as part of the criminal proceedings.

This case highlights the importance of accurate customs documentation and security protocols within the import/export process.
