Haradinaj Commemorates Ilaz Kodra and Drenica Battle

Daut Haradinaj, deputy of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, marked the anniversary of the Battle of Drenica on April 30, 2026, honoring commander Ilaz Kodra and the fallen fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK). Haradinaj described the date as a profoundly significant and painful moment in the history of Kosovo’s liberation war. Speaking at a memorial event, Haradinaj highlighted the actions of Ilaz Kodra, founder of the UÇK, who, according to accounts, sacrificed himself to protect numerous Drenica fighters during a confrontation with Serbian forces.

The battle resulted in the deaths of commander Ilaz Kodra and 48 other UÇK members, alongside numerous wounded. Haradinaj emphasized the subsequent Serbian response, detailing the killing and massacre of 280 civilians – innocent victims – in retaliation for the UÇK’s losses. He underscored the event as a pivotal and tragic moment in the struggle for Kosovo’s independence.

The commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict, with Ilaz Kodra consistently recognized as a central figure in this period.
