Erdogan Promises New Measures Following School Attacks
Following a week of devastating attacks targeting educational institutions in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced the implementation of additional legal regulations concerning firearm ownership. The announcement comes after six individuals, including eight students aged 10 and 11 and a teacher, were killed in separate incidents. On Wednesday, a 14-year-old student opened fire at a school in Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey, resulting in the deaths of the students and teacher.
The attacker, who died at the scene, was armed with five firearms. Authorities identified the individual as the son of a former police inspector, who has been taken into custody for questioning. A separate incident occurred on Tuesday in Sanliurfa, southeastern Turkey, where a former student fatally shot individuals at his former secondary school before being confronted by police and subsequently dying.
“We will implement additional legal regulations regarding the restriction of gun ownership,” Erdogan stated following a cabinet meeting. The government is responding to the escalating violence with a commitment to strengthening security measures and reviewing existing regulations. Investigations into both attacks are ongoing.
