Flora Xhemani Baba: Kukesi and Korça are purchasing oil in Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Tourism expert Flora Xhemani Baba has voiced significant worries about rising fuel costs in Albania and their effects on the country’s northern areas. She noted that inhabitants of Kukës, Korçë, and Tropojë are no longer buying fuel domestically; instead, they are sourcing it from neighboring nations like Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Montenegro. This shift in purchasing behavior, according to Flora Xhemani Baba, stems from the elevated taxes currently applied within Albania.

The prime minister has defended these taxes, arguing they are essential for funding vital services and infrastructure development. However, in practice, these taxes place a considerable financial strain on Albanian citizens. Residents of Kukësi, Korça, and Tropoja consistently purchase fuel outside Albania, specifically in Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.

This is because the prime minister’s explanation – that regional countries also levy taxes on citizens – has proven to be a persistent issue. Essentially, the accumulation of taxes on fuel, as perceived by Flora Xhemani Baba, outweighs any benefits derived from their implementation.
