Former Greek Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis, has issued a forceful condemnation of the government’s military actions in the Eastern Mediterranean. He characterizes the area as “impoverished,” arguing the situation demands a different approach. According to varoufakis, the Greek prime minister’s deployment of four F-16 fighter jets and a frigate to Cyprus was not intended for defense of the island.
Instead, he contends that the purpose was to safeguard a British base located there. Varoufakis further alleges that the United States are leveraging this territory to execute attacks against Gaza and Iran. He believes this represents a significant escalation of geopolitical tensions.
The outspoken minister also leveled criticism at Europe, accusing it of “cowardice and feelings of guilt” concerning antisemitism. He stressed that Europe’s historical backing of the Hebrew genocide is now demonstrably reflected in its current support for Palestinians. “Greece has lost its independence and has become a satellite of Israel,” varoufakis declared.
He emphasized that the country is subject to influence not only from the US but also from other powerful actors. This situation, he argues, underscores a broader shift in Greece’s geopolitical standing, a concern voiced by the former minister.
