Former Minister of Culture: Recognition of Kosovo proves we were independent from Serbia.

Former Montenegrin Minister Details 2008 Kosovo Recognition Decision

Podgorica, Montenegro – Miodrag Vlahović, a former minister of foreign affairs for Montenegro, discussed the 2008 decision to recognize the Republic of Kosovo in a recent interview with PIKË podcast journalist Veton Surroi. Vlahović emphasized that the recognition process was a deliberate and carefully considered strategic move. According to Vlahović, the decision was initially a minority opinion within Montenegro, but was ultimately adopted by the government.

He explained that the rationale behind the move was to assert Montenegro’s independence from Serbia. Vlahović revealed that he proposed a coordinated approach, suggesting recognition alongside North Macedonia, to mitigate the anticipated negative reaction from Belgrade. “We did this and it is one of the successes of that government,” he stated.

The former minister acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that public opinion at the time was not universally supportive. The move represented a significant step for Montenegro in its relations with the region and underscored a commitment to European integration. The interview provided further insight into the strategic thinking behind this pivotal moment in Montenegrin foreign policy.
