The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has issued a warning regarding the continued exploitation of visa-free travel arrangements by citizens of Russia and China. The agency reports that these individuals are utilizing liberal entry regimes in several Western Balkan countries as a means to attempt irregular entry into the European Union. In its risk assessment covering the period 2026-2027, Frontex has identified key migratory corridors.
The report specifically highlights that Serbia remains a primary route for this pattern of movement, alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The agency noted that Russian and Chinese nationals continue to benefit from the relaxed visa policies within the region. These individuals are reportedly arriving by air into the Balkan nations and subsequently attempting to proceed toward countries within the European bloc.
Frontex’s analysis indicates that these movements pose ongoing border security challenges. Despite ongoing operational efforts by border authorities, the misuse of existing visa protocols persists. In response to these trends, Brussels is actively engaged in efforts to harmonize visa policies across the region.
This harmonization aims to close potential loopholes that currently allow for unauthorized onward travel. The ongoing monitoring by Frontex underscores the necessity for unified border management strategies to secure the external borders of the European zone against irregular migration flows originating from these transit points, including Serbia.
