Gashi: Every citizen will have their own family doctor in Pristina, with wait times of up to 30 minutes.

Bujar Gashi, the Director of the Health Directorate in the Municipality of Pristina, announced that the healthcare system in Kosovo is moving toward a model where every citizen will be assigned a designated family doctor. During the podcast “Health in First Place,” which was supported by United Hospital, Gashi detailed that the selection of a primary family doctor is a core component of ongoing national reforms. Gashi stated that the process will involve a competitive selection among medical professionals, as he noted that individual patient needs may vary when selecting a suitable doctor.

He confirmed that the Ministry is actively engaged in working groups to prepare for this transition. Regarding current service levels, Gashi assessed that waiting times of up to 30 minutes at family medicine centers are acceptable given the current workload of the system. The new structure is designed to ensure that citizens have the opportunity to establish a continuous relationship with a chosen doctor.

Those who register for this service will participate in the selection process. The overarching goal of these reforms is to solidify primary care by ensuring every individual has access to consistent, dedicated family medical care. This shift aims to improve the continuity of care across the population through a formalized system of assigned family doctors.
