Health officials and Spain regarding the outbreak of Hantavirus: Situation under control, no signs of spread.

WHO and Spain Collaborate on Hantavirus Outbreak Response

Geneva, Switzerland – The World Health Organization (WHO) and the government of Spain are working together to manage an outbreak of hantavirus linked to the “MV Hondius” tourist cruise ship. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the Montcloe Palace on December 12, 2026, to discuss the ongoing response. The meeting focused on the operational efforts following the initial detection of the virus onboard the vessel.

WHO requested assistance from Spain, citing the limitations of the initial response team, designated “Green Head,” which was positioned closest to the incident. According to reports in El Pais, this collaboration aimed to mitigate the potential for a broader epidemic. Mr.

Ghebreyesus stated that, as of today, “currently there is nothing to indicate a greater spread” of the hantavirus. However, he emphasized that the situation remains under close monitoring by both WHO and Spanish authorities. The focus remains on containing the outbreak within the confines of the cruise ship and ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
