How do the Balkan countries stand regarding freedom of the media?

Global Press Freedom Declines, Kosovo Shows Positive Shift According to RSF Index

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released its 25th annual World Press Freedom Index, revealing a concerning trend of declining conditions for journalists globally. The analysis indicates a significant deterioration in press freedom across numerous countries, with 100 out of 180 assessed nations and territories experiencing a decrease in their scores. The index highlights a complex picture of the state of freedom of the press around the world.

While isolated improvements were noted in certain regions, the overall trend remains negative. Specifically, the Western Balkans, with the exception of Kosovo, demonstrated a general decline in press freedom rankings. Kosovo achieved a notable advancement within the index, rising to 84th place – a 15-position improvement from the previous year.

According to RSF, this represents the most significant progress observed within the region. However, the country remains among those with the lowest rankings in Europe. The index underscores the ongoing challenges faced by journalists seeking to report freely in many parts of the world, emphasizing the continued importance of protecting and promoting press freedom globally.

The report serves as a critical assessment of the current state of the world’s press.

  1. It’s deeply troubling to see a global decline in press freedom, particularly for countries like Kosovo where progress is being made.
