Hoxhaj: Rejection of the American gas project cost Kosovo the opportunity for recognition by Greece.

Hoxhaj Cites Gas Project Rejection as Lost Opportunity for Kosovo-Greece Recognition

Prishtina – Former Kosovo Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj has asserted that the rejection of the 2021 American gas project directly impacted Kosovo’s prospects for recognition by Greece. Speaking on April 5, 2026, Hoxhaj attributed this lost opportunity to decisions made by the current government. According to Hoxhaj, the potential for Kosovo-Greece relations, and broader international recognition, was intrinsically linked to the American gas project.

He stated that in 2020, Kosovo declined a contract with Global Contour for Kosovo Re, and subsequently, in 2021, the government refused to proceed with the American project, which was presented as a viable energy solution for the country. “Energy security today is equal to the protection of Kosovo,” Hoxhaj explained. “We, under previous leadership, made the decision to reject the contract with Global Contour for Kosovo Re in 2020, and then in 2021, we said ‘no’ to the American gas project, which was on the table, including the potential recognition of Kosovo by Greece.”

Hoxhaj’s comments highlight a contentious period in Kosovo’s energy policy and raise questions about the long-term implications of these decisions for the country’s international standing.
