Intelligence agencies warn Trump: Netanyahu could undermine Iran deal

US intelligence agencies have alerted the administration regarding potential actions by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that could jeopardize the recently negotiated peace agreement between the US and Iran. Reports indicate that Netanyahu is under significant domestic political pressure to maintain military operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, despite the terms of the agreement calling for a cessation of hostilities. US intelligence assessments suggest that Netanyahu’s political viability in upcoming elections is tied to his commitment not to withdraw Israeli forces from Lebanon.

Polls suggest that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens support the continuation of hostilities against Hezbollah. Tensions escalated on Friday following Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which were conducted in response to a Hezbollah drone attack that resulted in the deaths of four Israeli soldiers. This heightened situation led to the postponement of a scheduled round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland, and US Vice President JD Vance canceled his planned visit.

Vance indirectly criticized the Israeli government, emphasizing that support for the US-Israel relationship is robust. Even Donald Trump has reportedly voiced disagreements with Netanyahu concerning the Lebanon operations, cautioning against excessive military responses. Currently, the Israeli army controls over 300 square kilometers of Lebanese territory, while Lebanese authorities report over 3,000 fatalities since mid-March.

Analysts caution that sustained conflict could lead to severe friction between Washington and Tel Aviv. While the US possesses mechanisms to exert pressure on Israel, such as limiting military aid and intelligence cooperation, it remains uncertain if the Trump administration will employ these measures should Israel continue operations that threaten the established US-Iran accord.
