Kajçev: The Joint Commission for the History of Macedonia-Bulgaria is blocked and not working

Tensions between Macedonia and Bulgaria remain elevated across several diplomatic fronts. During a discussion regarding the matter, historian Naum Kajchev, a member of the Joint Commission for Historical and Educational Issues, noted the lack of concrete outcomes. According to Bulgarian media reports, Kajchev stated that while meetings and discussions occur, they have not yielded decisions that the governments of both nations can adopt and implement.

He pointed out that when the commission was initially established, it had produced texts and decisions that received approval from both governments. However, Kajchev observed that these agreed-upon resolutions are not currently being put into practice. Furthermore, he indicated that the work of the commission has been “stalled” and proceeding “in circles” since 2019.

Kajchev provided an example of recent activity, mentioning that the last meeting took place at the beginning of June, specifically on June 3-4 in Skopje. Nevertheless, he concluded by reiterating that achieving tangible results remains a challenge. These comments highlight ongoing difficulties in translating diplomatic talks into actionable policy between the two countries.
