The government of Lithuania, led by the prime minister Inga Ruginiene and her cabinet, has resigned following internal disagreements and subsequent shifts within the ruling coalition. The dissolution of the administration occurred after the social democratic party, a center-left political group, terminated its agreement with the populist party, Nemuno Ausra. The catalyst for the split involved allegations concerning a former leader from Nemuno Ausra.
Specifically, former deputy Remigijus Zemaitaitis faced legal repercussions last year. He was fined 5,000 euros after authorities determined that he had incited hatred against Jewish people. Furthermore, the ruling cited instances where Zemaitaitis allegedly minimized the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust through social media posts and public statements made during May and June of 2023.
The legal proceedings related to this matter are currently before the Court of Appeal, as prosecutors are seeking a more severe sentence for the charges. Zemaitaitis has since maintained his stance regarding the accusations. The political instability, therefore, arose directly after the allegations and subsequent legal scrutiny surrounding the coalition partners, leading to the resignation of the prime minister and her cabinet.
The fallout underscores the deep divisions within the governing structure.
