Rare Vaughan Williams Music Set to Be Revealed

The music world is observing the discovery of a previously unknown work by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The piece, titled “Before the Mirror,” was unearthed this week within the archives of Morley College in London. Musicologist Elaine Andrews made the finding, locating a manuscript of the song alongside a poem by Algernon Swinburne, which itself was inspired by a painting by James Abbott Whistler.

The music was originally broadcast on the “PM” program of Radio 4. “Before the Mirror” demonstrates a distinctive musical style characterized by bold tonal qualities and expressive ambiguity. It was composed shortly after Vaughan Williams’ marriage to Adeline Fisher in 1897.

The manuscript contains revisions and deletions, offering a detailed insight into the composer’s creative process. This lost music represents a significant addition to Vaughan Williams’ oeuvre and is expected to generate considerable interest among scholars and enthusiasts. The discovery highlights the ongoing potential for uncovering previously unknown works within musical archives.

Further analysis of the manuscript is planned.
