Suhareka Survivor Details 1996 Massacre, 27 Years Later

Tahire Llugaxhiu, a survivor of the Bukosh massacre in Suhareka, has recounted details of the event for the first time in 27 years. The incident, which occurred in 1996, resulted in the death of her husband, Avdullah Llugaxhiu, at the hands of Serbian forces. Speaking with visible distress, Llugaxhiu recounts the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.

She describes the day as irrevocably altering her life, detailing the loss of her husband and the profound emotional impact of the experience. “I have five children, that day I had three with me, two were unborn,” she stated, her voice trembling with emotion. “The children went to the front, the husband is dead.” Llugaxhiu explained that the family endured six months of searching before Avdullah’s remains were eventually recovered and buried.

At the time of the incident, Llugaxhiu was 39 years old and her husband was 45. She described the period following the massacre as marked by immense hardship. As a survivor, Llugaxhiu continues to grapple with the trauma, stating, “My heart doesn’t sleep anymore.” The event remains a deeply painful memory for her and her family.
