Masks are back in New York, Chicago and Detroit – smoke covers American cities

Major American cities, including Detroit, Chicago, and Washington, are reporting some of the world’s poorest air quality, with New York ranking fourth for pollution levels. Citizens in these areas are reportedly wearing masks, a practice reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from the IQAir monitoring platform indicates alarming pollution indices: Detroit recorded a level of 435, Chicago at 330, and Washington at 242, all classified as very dangerous for human health.

In contrast, some cities previously known for high pollution, such as Jakarta, New Delhi, and Beijing, are currently reporting better air quality. A dense layer of gray smoke has covered many areas in the northeastern United States, severely limiting visibility. In Arlington, Virginia, the usual clear view of Washington’s monuments, like the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, was significantly obscured.

Residents have also noted an unusual smell in the air, prompting authorities to issue a purple alert, signaling air that is highly detrimental to health. Similar conditions have been observed in New York and Boston. Authorities have advised residents to avoid outdoor activities due to hazardous airborne particles.

Experts attribute the smoke to large forest fires occurring across the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, as well as the American state of Minnesota. Furthermore, experts warn that climate change is contributing to the increased severity and frequency of these fires, as drought conditions heighten the flammability of vegetation and soil.
