Mercedes Designer Expresses Concerns Over Declining Wagon Demand

A Mercedes designer has voiced significant concerns regarding the diminishing market for station wagon vehicles, stating that “nobody is buying” them. The designer’s comments highlight a growing disconnect between automotive design preferences and actual consumer demand. Despite continued interest from automotive designers and journalists, the reality of the market indicates a substantial decline in wagon sales.

Specifically, the designer noted a lack of consumer interest in the United States, where demand is nonexistent. In China, the vehicle type is largely misunderstood, and there is no discernible market. Furthermore, high prices in Europe limit the potential customer base.

Mercedes has previously explored similar models, such as the CLS Shooting Brake, but these efforts have yielded limited sales success. Consequently, the company is currently hesitant to pursue a wagon version for the upcoming electric C-Class model. The designer acknowledged a personal preference for wagons but emphasized that all decisions are ultimately driven by sales data, not individual tastes.

He stated that the company’s strategy is based on market realities, rather than design inclinations. The future of wagon development at Mercedes appears uncertain given current trends.
