New survey in Switzerland: Now a majority opposes the initiative to limit residents to 10 million

As the date for the referendum in Switzerland approaches on April 14th, opposition to a specific population control initiative is reportedly gaining traction. The initiative, formally titled “Against a Switzerland of 10 Million Residents,” was launched by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP). Its core proposal mandates capping the total population of Switzerland at a maximum of 10 million people by the year 2050.

This proposed cap would necessitate significant restrictions on the entry of foreign nationals into the country. While the debate surrounding the initiative has been active, recent polling data suggests a shift in public sentiment. According to the second poll conducted by the Swiss public broadcaster SRG, analysis published via Swissinfo.ch indicates that 52 percent of voters are currently expected to vote against the measure.

Although campaign efforts were reported as evenly matched at the beginning of May, sources suggest that the opposition to the initiative has since taken a noticeable lead. The proponents of the measure, which seeks to limit the number of residents, currently face opposition support at a rate of 45 percent among voters surveyed. The outcome of this referendum will determine the future parameters for immigration and demographic planning within Switzerland.
