Pharmacists in Basel taking action against family violence

Basel Pharmacists Launch Initiative to Address Family Violence Awareness

Basel, 03/05/2026 – Pharmacists in the Basel region are implementing a proactive strategy to identify and support individuals experiencing family violence. Recognizing pharmacies as accessible points of contact, local pharmacists are offering an online course designed to educate employees on recognizing the signs of domestic abuse. According to pharmacist Yolanda Ughini, who operates across multiple Basel pharmacies, “We are at a low threshold and we exist everywhere.” Ughini highlighted the importance of establishing a trusting relationship with clients, noting that the significant number of female employees within the pharmacy sector is a beneficial factor, given that the majority of victims of family violence are women.

Recent data from the federal government indicates a notable increase in violent crimes and murders over the past year, with a particular rise in fatalities involving partners. Historically, victims of violence have often remained silent. The initiative aims to break down these barriers and provide a discreet avenue for support.

The project focuses on building awareness and fostering a supportive environment within pharmacies, contributing to a broader effort to address the issue of family violence within the Basel community.
